The Eels with strings tour last year was different from past tours; but, then again, I've seen Eels 9 times now and no two tours have been remotely the same. The with strings tour suited the last album perfectly though. I loved it. But this year's tour was very old Eels-ish, close to 2001 and Souljacker ... loud and fast. It was amazing.

We met the band again and I even had another chat with the lighting guy. But, again, I forgot to ask his name. Even better, although quite surreal, as I was standing outside a bar later while on the phone, E and the Chet walked right past me.

Lucy's night was topped off by meeting Stuart Murdoch (lead singer of Belle and Sebastian).

One of the best things about the garden of my old house was the nest of miner bees in an old mole hole just in front of the shed. I used to love sitting watching them during the Summer. They never bothered me and I never bothered them. Well, they weren't too impressed when I had to replace a fence panel. One of the new best things about the garden in our new house is the nest of miner bees in a little hole by the door of the shed (I know it's not a shed, but we don't know what else to call it).

You can see the hole by the bottom of the door frame. And there's a bee too. I had to sit there a half hour before one would let me take its picture. And a cool fact about miner bees. Did you know that they don't sting? I didn't either.

A long time ago, on a train to Liverpool, I sent Lucy a text message (she was sitting across the aisle) ... I wish I had my own walkie talkie ... and she replied ... to speak to god every night ... which was also kind of cool. Did I mention I'm going to see Eels tomorrow?

While aimlessly browsing through any old rubbish on the internet, when I'm supposed to be doing some work, I came across an old map (1861) showing our street. You can just make out our house ... well, if you use a little imagination ... in the middle, by the k of Sodhouse Bank. Oh, there's the Golden Quoit just up the road too, or the Traveller's Rest as it's now called (since 1895 apparently).

I'm not sure why, but it's kind of cool.

It's a good time for music. Good music, that is. I'm gong to see Eels on Monday; in Glasgow and with a new line-up. They're sold out so don't go rushing out to try to buy tickets. And Lisa Germano has a new album due out in a couple of weeks. Oh, and I have a ticket for Leeds festival. What could be better you ask? Well, nothing really. Unless you add a re-formed Presidents of the United States of America UK tour of course. Ah ... little blue dune buggeh ... in the sand... Yes, it's a good time for music.

It's been a busy week; a week which saw the departure of the yellow birds from the nesting box in the garden, although this one caused much stress as a result of its slowness in taking flight and regular cat incursions.

Luckily, after being placed several times on the roof of next door's extension, it began to flap around and avoided being eaten.

I also went to see Lou Reed at the Sage this week. Even though he didn't do any of his older stuff, apart from Perfect Day, he was pretty good.

And it's kind of cool that one of his only two concerts in the UK this year was in Gateshead.

Although a little bloody, bird is now lumpless and cauterised, and seems to be pretty much his usual self. Panic over.

One day, it was a sunny day in May 1993, I visited my then local garden centre during a spell of exam fever. I'd intended buying some plants, or anything green, but came back with a cockateil. Bird and I have been through a lot together; we've shared good times and bad, and I look on him as a real friend. Ok, so he sometimes hisses at me, but he knows my darkest secrets (he's a great listener).

Bird's never had a day's illness in his life, he's never complained about anything and never says a bad work about anyone. Well, I don't think he has. A few days ago, though, I noticed a lump. He went to the vet's today (in a Converse shoe box) and needs to go back in the morning to have the lump removed. He's being brave about it, but I worry about him.
