Last night, I met Paula, Debbie, Lucy and Ian in Gotham Town. Lucy and Ian had arrived only minutes before me; unfortunately, though, Paula and Debbie had been in town for some time. Within minutes of my arrival, they began singing. As you can see, singing also involves waving your arms around and pointing fingers at invisible objects in the air.

I say unfortunately because Paula and Debbie had been drinking vodka. They'd been to Bar 42, which for Paula is never a good thing to do. After several triple vodkas, they left for Gotham Town. Where they drank several jugs of vodka and red bull.

They also danced. In their own special way.

After a little while, and a jug or two, Lucy danced too.  Her dance with Debbie also involved pointing fingers.

A little while later, after the ritual drowning of her new phone in a glass of voda and red bull, and letting her play with plastic magnetic letters in the Forth, we took Paula home and put her to bed. She has little memory of her evening; which is probably a good thing.

Bought a new bed today on ebay; well it's hardly new, but at fifty quid it's a bargain and will look great in the spare room. Now I only need to find a way to get it from Middlesbrough.

Although we've now lived in Gateshead for over four years, and I pass through Wrekenton almost every day on my way to and from work, I've never seemed to have the opportunity to take this picture before today.  I guess I'm usually sitting  on a bus as I pass. Anyway, possibly the worst ever use of the apostrophe ...

I've just had my first Erdinger of the year. Mmmm.

A dozen or so years ago, because the living room in my old house was in darkness most of the day, I had to cut down a Sycamore tree which had grown a lot bigger than I'd imagined when I'd planted it several years earlier. I'd originally taken the very tiny tree from some woods near where I grew up. I'm not sure why, but I felt it important to keep a piece of it after cutting it down. After spending a few years in the loft, the piece of trunk eventually became a plant stand and a candle holder (now in use as a webcam stand, facing out into the street). I'm quite attached to both and, over the years, I've become a recycler of any old piece of wood.

While cutting back a bush in the garden this Summer, I spotted an interesting branch and decided to keep it. In keeping with its origin, it's now my new garden webcam stand, with a view of its parent bush. I did consider keeping up the story (firmly believed by my three year-old grandchild) that it was actually a reindeer antler, but thought I should put it to a more practical use.

While waxing the wood earlier today, I noticed that Paula's rabbit was 'behaving' strangely. After 20 minutes or so, I realised it had crashed while reading the weather forecast. It seems quite well again now, though. Strange thing.

Despite a long lie-in this morning afternoon, I'm feeling a little tired today. However, once again, we've experienced the benefits of drinking only nice beer last night. No chemicals, no headache.

For us, yesterday evening began around three. After work, we met in the Union Rooms in town, where we had two very nce pints of Maximus. Since it's quite strong, and we'd not then eaten, we went to the Flatbread Cafe.

We had some very nice flatbread and decided that we should eat there more often. We also enjoyed some hemp beer.

We then went to Popolo, where we had some gorgeous Erdinger.

We do so like Erdinger. At around six, we left Popolo and watched fireworks; only for a little while though, since it was freezing.

We then took refuge from the elements in the Forth, where we had some Franziskaner, probably the nicest beer ever.

In the Forth, we met some gentlemen. And Phil too.

We then all went together to Gotham Town, where we had San Miguel. Yes, in Amstel glasses.

And had the now customary dialogue with the DJ.

And another pint of beer.

Bob danced a little. Well, Bob danced quitea lot. Like only Bob can dance.

Paula got a little carried away.

And Phil introduced us to a celebrity.

We then took our leave of the gentlemen and travelled by licensed hackney carriage to the Three Tuns, to see in the new year. Oh, and also to partake of a favourite delicacy; Scampi Fries. They're packed with MSG and burn your tongue, but they're quite delicious.

We had Staropramen too.

And some more Staropramen.

Then, after another Staropramen, we took our leave and returned home to play Cyndi lauper loudly. An excellent ending to any evening and what better way to begin 2009?

We've done very little today though.
