Well, it's New Year's eve tomorrow. Last year's was really nice. This year's may be, but it won't be the same.

We're funny things aren't we? People, I mean.

I almost amputated a finger this evening. Well, I cut it on a can of chick peas.

I met the kids for lunch yesterday, and a couple of pints, then had an evening in Newcastle with Trevor. For the past few years, we'd had our gentlemanly evenings in the Union Rooms, but last night we tried the newly opened Mile Castle. It's a lovely old building, but the interior had been ripped out when it was converted to a sports bar a few years ago. Although I've some nice memories from that bar, one must admit that it was pretty tasteless, so the new interior's a huge improvement and is to be our venue for the future.

Trevor showed me his new ipod touch and I have to admit I'd fallen way behind with such things. It made my six year-old 4th generation ipod, with its mono , text only, screen and 20Gb  hard drive,  look pretty dated.  Well, ancient to be honest.  So, thanks  to Trevor and my good friend Mr Guinness, I purchased a new ipod from Amazon on my return to the house.

I may have to frame my old one.

Went into Newcastle today, bought a nice suit in the sales and had an enjoyable pint of Franziskaner in the Forth. Ms Artois and I have just downloaded a couple of albums from Amazon. We're watching Hamlet, with Patrick Stewart and David Tennant on TV; it's really pretty good.

Well, that's another Christmas day pretty much over with. For lots of reasons, including an altercation with a coathanger (which left me quite damaged), this wasn't the best Chistmas I've ever had. But, it was good to have time with the kids/grandkids at Debbie's.

Wednesday 23 December 2009 23:12

Went for a pint or two with Phil tonight in Washington. An enjoyable, gentleman's evening.

Monday 21 December 2009 00:06

I'm home now. I've had an nice evening with my friend Peter, in the company of 300 foot Gorilla. We also saw a famous Scottish band called the Richt Hoat Chilli Peppers. Most importantly, my companion and I enjoyed Erdinger, although we did have to endure plastic glasses.

Peter's post-it note of Metro times was the subject of much discussion, I should say.

We did have some difficulty in meeting; mainly the result of the non-existence of a pub called the Old Riddler, or something along those lines (I do forgive Peter since he'd not been to this (renamed) pub for several decades). But the Cluny wasn't too bad to find, even though it was down the most slippery hill in the country (we'd sat in the Ship Inn, opposite, watching people sliding down the hill).

We also met some nice people (who'd spent a lot of time admiring Peter's post-it note). I forget their names, but they were very nice.

The gorillas are playing at the Tuns in January. I shall be there, so feel free to join me. Actually, that could be a problem if I don't resolve my ftp password issues and can't manage to post this in the near future.

Sunday 20 December 2009 10:23

Bloody snow. It may look nice, but it's freezing outside. And inside this damned old house. I had a bit of an adventure getting home last night. It was snowing pretty heavily, but the buses were still running, albeit slowly. The bus I'd caught struggled to get up hills and at one point, just outside Washington, travelled sideways along the road, sliding on ice. Cars were stuck at the side of the road and the bus hit one of them and knocked it off the road. It was quite surreal, in slow motion because the bus was sliding around. The bus driver didn't even notice since the rear side of the bus actually hit the car as it was sliding sideways. He probably had other things on his mind. The bus eventually made it to Wrekenton before it broke down. Luckily, there was another bus and home wasn't far.

Still, the snow does hide the weeds in the garden very nicely.

I'm hoping that it doesn't snow any more today. I'm supposed to be meeting Peter later in some pub or another at Manors. The plan is to have a couple of pints there, then walk down to the Cluny to see 300 foot Gorilla. It should be a good night if we actually get there.

A funny thing happened on the way to .... Or, rather, a funny thing happened tonight. Tonight was my kind of Christmas do. I went out with people I used to work with a long time ago. And it wasn't a bad evening really.

But .....

..... on my way home, after missing the last metro and deciding on a cab, I got talking to a random girl (well, she was being hassled a bit by a couple of dodgy looking blokes). After a bit she said 'are you Debbie Moore's dad?' She said she'd wanted to ask as soon as she saw me.

Apparently she used to go to school with my eldest child. And she'd been round our house a few times.  Her name is Joanne Jones.

Spooky I think. Synchronicity I'm sure.

Wednesday 16 December 2009 23:02

It's been a busy week so far; what, with Christmas shopping and all. And it's not as though it'll slacken off at all before the end of the week. Anyway, while I've a minute, some pictures from last weekend.

Sunday 13 December 2009 02:04

I've just put my youngest child on the night bus to Cairo Sunderland. She has Suggs' towell. Well, it's hers now. Madness were truly great. I've had a brilliant night. I'm a little drunk. Gotham Town before and after the gig was cool; lots of people dressed-up and having fun. I've never seen so many fezes (is that the right plural?) in one place. I really enjoyed seeing them at Glastonbury this year, but seeing a band at a gig is way better than a festival. It was a bit colder than Glastonbury tonight though.

Tonight made me think of other 70/80s Ska bands I'd hoped to see this year. I had tickets for the Beat, as a birthday present in March, and there were plans of seeing the Specials (who were very good at Glastonbury) last month in Liverpool, but neither happened.

Pictures will follow when I get them off my camera.

Saturday 12 December 2009 10:21

I'm feeling a little fragile this morning. I'd only gone out to do some Christmas shopping, but called into the Bridge for a pint of Guinness. Which then led to another. So I'm going to try to fit some shopping in today. With a hangover.

Thursday 10 December 2009 21:33

I had a deadline for a paper at work today. I didn't hit it. The week's flown past, as they all seem to nowadays, so I was out of time before I knew it. Still, a few late nghts and it'll be done. One positive aspect of time passing quickly is that it's Friday tomorrow. And I've a half day too.

And then it's Madness on Saturday. I don't think I'll ever bother seeing them again; after all, too many bands are making come-backs, but I'm quite looking forward to the gig.

Friday 4 December 2009 18:54

Jung was right you know. About Synchronicity I mean.

Tuesday 1 December 2009 22:00

I've just watched the first episode of Paradox on BBC1. It wasn't brilliant, or rubbish, but there was one reference to many worlds theory. Pretty cool I think.
