Things that go bang …

Unfortunately, my bargain ebay charger seems to have caused the premature death of our TV. Everything else plugged-in near the exploding charger has survived, but the (few months old) TV is lifeless. Admittedly, I was considering a bigger TV, but I’d no intention of buying one so soon. Luckily, my second in command has purchased a replacement this evening.

Lessons may have been learned.

Agony

I’m currently watching Stargate Universe on Netflix. It’s not great, but a person doesn’t need to think too much while viewing. However, at the end of this particular episode, just after the hallucinogenic alien tics were removed from people’s heads, and just as I was starting to nod off, the music caught my attention. Eels. Eels’ Agony, from the Souljacker album. One of their best albums. I may need to watch the remaining (many) episodes.

Facebook

It may be a grandchild thing (I hope it’s not related to my second in command), but Netflix has recommended a film for me.

Which has nothing to do with Facebook. That I know of.

Related to Facebook, though, is the email I received today. Apparently, I’m having problems getting into my account. Which I would do if I couldn’t remember my email address.

Since I don’t do the Facebook thing, I shouldn’t really be receiving such emails. So, that leaves one of the (unknown number of) people who believe that they own my email address. They may share my name or be in a relationship with someone who does. My money’s on the bloke from Northern Ireland. Or maybe the one from Essex. Either way, I find it hard to comprehend how someone doesn’t know, or communicate to their loved ones, their own email address.

It does my head in.

Mr Oliver

In need of a starter for Christmas lunch, I stumbled across a recipe for mushroom rolls on the Jamie Oliver website. They were a bit of a faff to make, but I found the process quite enjoyable.

They were actually really nice. And the leftover wine was good too (I only needed 100ml, but I had a couple of bottles).

Karotz

I fear that the writing’s on the wall for karotz; they seem destined to follow the path of the nabaztag.

Which is a real shame since it’s a cool concept.

Bundestag

Really, not so long ago you could walk in off the street (ok, so the security was a bit tough). Now you have to go through an arduous online booking process.

I know, I shouldn’t leave everything until the last minute.

Ice bucket challenge

No, I’ve not been nominated to do the ice bucket challenge. There’d be no point in anyone nominating me because:
1) I don’t use Facebook
2) I wouldn’t do it anyway
3) I don’t like being told to do something
4) I give to other charities
5) of stuff like this

Pipelight

I must say, I’m really impressed with the pipelight solution to the whole problem of running Netflix under Linux. After trying it on one computer, I’ve now added it to the bedroom computer, after taking the opportunity to replace Windows with Ubuntu. It’s pretty easy to set up, just a tiny amount of command line stuff and an add-on to the browser.

And, best of all, Ubuntu’s startup screen is more in keeping with the decor than was Windows.

With a long weekend ahead and Eels tickets purchased this morning, it’s been quite a satisfying day.
