Alternative Stores

I finally made a trip to the vegan shop in Benton, the strangely named Alternative Stores. Well worth a visit, even if you’re not a veggie. They gave me free chocolate, even though my second in command had eaten most of the sample food on display.

I’ll certainly be returning.

Cheese sandwich

A cheese sandwich.

Or not. To be honest, I’ve not been impressed with vegan ‘cheese’. The soft, spreadable stuff’s OK, but the harder variety’s not great.

Until today. Vegan cheese slices purchased this evening from Asda have proven to be quite edible. I’d even go as far to say that they’re really nice.

Well done Asda.

Sad Elvis

Stuff tends to pass me by, but is it close to the anniversary of Elvis’ death?

I only mention this because Priscilla Presley seems to be on every UK TV chat show lately. And I only mention her because she’s had pretty shocking cosmetic surgery.

Why?

Republic

I feel the need to say that I seriously believe that the UK should become a republic. Although I do appreciate that a single, joined-up republic couldn’t happen.

Not here. Which is a shame.

Samosas

I have a great fondness for samosas. They’re so simple, but delicious. They’re currently featuring on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen Live, including making the pastry from scratch.

However, I’m somewhat concerned by the statement It’s a traditional vegetarian recipe, but I’m using lamb.

Peterborough via the Northwest

I’m currently sitting in my most favourite pub in Peterborough. With a delicious pint of Sam Smith’s extra stout. We’re going to our favourite curry house next.

Food’s needed more thought since I started the vegan thing. But Manchester and Liverpool made life pretty easy. The Thirsty Scholar, on Oxford Road, near the O2 Academy is a great bar, with a brilliant vegan menu.

It’s brilliant because it’s all vegan. There’re veggie options, but the main offerings are vegan. It’s pub food, but like the chef (a great bloke called Andy) says it’s not healthy, but it’s not as unhealthy.

The food was really nice though.

Andy (I hope that’s his name) told us about a place in Liverpool, the Egg Cafe, for which I’ll be eternally grateful. It’s a lovely place with gorgeous food.

It’s great to know I’ve a couple of cool places to eat in a couple of my favourite cities.

Dead things

I’m currently watching the Elvis ’68 comeback special on Channel 5. If you disregard the stuff from the early days it’s actually rather good.

It reminds me of the Eels gig in Liverpool, a few years ago, where the band wore the same red suits as the band at the Elvis ’68 night.

Earlier this evening, I encountered something pretty disturbing by the castle in town.

I can’t help but wonder how many poor creatures contributed to this meal.

Avian decomposition

It’s that time of year again. You know, the time when people feel the need to educate vegetarians (and new vegans) in the benefits of consuming birds. For many years, I found this mildly irritating, although I could always feel smug inside knowing I was doing the right thing. Perhaps it’s an age thing, but it’s becoming moderately annoying.

I do, though, retain a clear conscience. Together with a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and several of the other benefits of eating birds.

Meat is Murder II

A few weeks ago, possibly influenced by beer, I bought a Morrissey T-shirt. Being a standard Gildan printed shirt, it didn’t quite fit, so I decided to copy it.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m not a Morrissey fan, but I do:
1) agree with his views about animals
2) like the shirt

Anyway, it worked out ok.
