White out

According to the Metro’s headline this morning, we have a white out. No, it’s just a little bit of snow.

When I was a lad, I had to walk to school in neck deep snow. What’s happening to the country?

Flooding

I live in the North. The proper north. We have bad weather on occasion; lesser Northerners may need to wear big coats when visiting.

But, apparently, there’s a need to build (admittedly temporary) flood defences in town.

Such an event may indicate that the North could be losing its resilience, its contra-southern-wussness.

Or something more serious. This could be the kind of random freak event that happens once in a lifetime. But, of course, it isn’t once in a lifetime.

So, perhaps, we need to think about the impact our mass consumption society is having on the planet. Alternatively, we could just pretend it isn’t happening.

At the end of the day, I live on a big hill, so I’m ok.

Batteries

After purchasing some batteries for my camera, I realised that I’d not transferred pictures from Kendal Calling last summer.

Of which these are just a few. The weather was a lot better than it appears and the mud wasn’t of Glastonbury standards. That was a particularly nice pint of raspberry beer too.

Logs

A broken significant other, combined with a cold spell, has led to a noticeable increase in our firewood consumption My working hours haven’t accommodated a firewood delivery, so Lidl’s stock of logs has been most welcome. And at only £3.29 a bag, they’re great value. We’ve bought three this week.

Slush

Yes, slush, not snow. Yesterday, I was forced to delay my planned Christmas shopping and, instead, spend time in a pub.

And all because modern buses are unable to cope with slush on our hill. My journey from Washington to Newcastle was not possible after a couple of hours of snow. My bus had to turn back when attempting to reach our street; other buses were already stuck on the hill and my double decker was sliding from side to side.

My bus ride ended at Gateshead Interchange, where I realised that a return from Newcastle by public transport wouldn’t happen in the near future. So, I had a couple of bottles of Tucher in ‘Spoons while waiting in vain for bus services to our hill to resume. Eventually, I gave up when a bus to Low Fell arrived, walking from there to my local.

I may attempt some shopping today.

Charters

This weekend involved an unplanned, additional, night in Peterborough. We’d originally intended only to stay on the Friday, following a party, then spend Saturday night in Kings Cliffe. But this did give us the opportunity to visit the Wortley Almshouses. I’m only allowed the one visit though; my second in command isn’t too keen on the regular patrons.

We did, however, stumble into Charters on (technically) three occasions over the weekend. Well, it’s very much a summer bar.

Long weekends

Are never long enough. Still, the weather’s been gorgeous and some time was spent in pubs doing a lot less than we’d planned. Yesterday was particularly good, with live music and great beer in the sunshine in Ouseburn. There’d be pictures, but they’re on my phone and I’m too lazy to transfer them. The Tyne Bar has another great band this Sunday at three; we may be there if tbe weather’s ok (they’re using the outdoor stage).
